The Bonga project is a multifaceted reforestation project in Gambella, a region in southwest Ethiopia. ZOA has been active in Gambella since 1996 and is well acquainted with the local context and issues. By providing emergency aid and reconstruction assistance, they aim to address the problems in this area in a sustainable and efficient manner. In 2015, a comprehensive program was initiated, addressing various problems simultaneously, starting with tree planting.
Tree planting and offering alternative forms of fuel not only help combat deforestation and offset CO2 emissions but also provide food and employment opportunities, creating more jobs for all residents in this area, whether they are refugees or not. More future prospects also mean more peace.
The Importance of Sustainability
The overall objective of the project is to work together to build a sustainable and peaceful community with hope for the future. This is achieved by planting trees and offering alternative forms of fuel. This has a positive impact on several aspects of the situation in Gambella.
Ecological impact: The project offsets CO2 emissions and provides biodiversity and food in Gambella by planting new forests (including fruit trees) with opportunities for both humans and animals.
Economic impact: The project creates employment opportunities for refugees and the local population.
Social impact: It contributes to peace between different groups in this area and offers new hope for the future!
